Marki lies just beyond Warsaw's northeastern boundary in Mazovia, and its shape is unmistakable on the map. The town grew along a single long main road, the old route from Warsaw toward Radzymin and Białystok, with side streets branching off on both sides like the teeth of a comb. Residential districts of detached houses fill the land between these branches.
For decades that main road carried heavy through traffic, and Marki became known for congestion until the S8 expressway was built to bypass the centre. The Długa river runs through the town, and patches of forest remain along its edges, giving the map a softer outline where streets end among trees rather than meeting another district.
A Marki map poster shows a very particular kind of suburban growth: linear, dense along its spine and looser at the edges. The long central axis gives the design a strong rhythm, while the river and woodland provide contrast.
