Orem covers the northern part of Utah Valley and slopes gently down from the foothills of the Wasatch Range toward the shore of Utah Lake. Like most Utah towns, it was laid out on a grid of wide, numbered streets, and from above the pattern is almost perfectly regular. Interstate 15 cuts through the western side, and Provo continues directly to the south with no visible break.
The city grew from orchards and farmland into one of the larger communities along the Wasatch Front. Utah Valley University, one of the largest universities in the state by enrolment, has its main campus here, close to the interstate. To the east, the land rises steeply toward Mount Timpanogos, whose mass dominates the skyline above the northern end of the valley.
An Orem map poster is a study in order. The grid runs almost from edge to edge, broken only by the diagonal lines of highways, by the campus, and by the canals and creeks coming down from the mountains. With the lakeshore on one side and the steep contours of the foothills on the other, the composition has a natural frame that suits a clean monochrome style.

Utah Lake shore
To the west the city reaches toward the flat, open shoreline of Utah Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake in the state. It gives the map a broad, empty edge that balances the dense grid.
Wasatch foothills
On the eastern side the grid stops against steep slopes rising toward Mount Timpanogos. From above, the change from orderly streets to open mountainside is sharp and easy to read.
