Tabanan is the capital of Tabanan Regency in south-western Bali, a short drive west of Denpasar. The land here slopes steadily from the mountains in the north towards the Indian Ocean in the south, and the town sits partway down that incline. On a map, the main roads follow the slope and link Tabanan with the coast and the highlands, while rivers cut deep, narrow valleys into the ground between them.

The regency is known for rice. Its terraced fields are watered by subak, the traditional cooperative irrigation system that UNESCO recognises as part of Bali's cultural landscape, including the terraces at Jatiluwih further up the slopes. The sea temple of Tanah Lot, on a rock off the regency's coast, is one of the island's most photographed sites. The town itself is more ordinary: a working administrative centre surrounded by farmland.

A Tabanan map poster shows a denser core of streets around the government and market area, which quickly loosens into lanes running between fields and villages. Ravines appear as long, parallel breaks in the pattern, all running roughly north to south with the fall of the land. The result is a map with a clear sense of direction, unlike the tangled coastal resort areas elsewhere in southern Bali.
