Abbottabad lies in the Orash Valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, surrounded by the hills of the Hazara region. It was founded in 1853 and named after James Abbott, the British administrator who established it. From above, the city stretches along the main road through the valley. Neighbourhoods climb the lower slopes, and the streets thin out toward the forested ridges around it.
The Karakoram Highway passes through the city on its way north toward Gilgit-Baltistan and China, which makes Abbottabad a staging point for travel into the mountains. Its mild summers have long drawn visitors from the plains. On the edge of the city, the Pakistan Military Academy at Kakul trains the army's officers.
