Actopan sits in the Mezquital Valley of Hidalgo, north-west of Pachuca, where irrigated fields meet dry hillsides. From above, the town reads as a tidy grid of blocks gathered around a central square. Toward the edges, the streets thin into farm tracks and scattered houses. Highways leading out of town cut clean lines through the pattern and link it to the state capital and the wider valley.
The town's best-known landmark is the sixteenth-century Augustinian convent of San Nicolás de Tolentino, a massive stone complex famous for its early colonial murals.
