Açu is in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte, in north-eastern Brazil, on the lower course of the Piranhas-Açu River. The river is the key to the town's map. Around it lies the dry sertão landscape, but the valley floor is greener and more heavily farmed, and the town grew on the land next to it.
Upstream, the river is held back by the large Armando Ribeiro Gonçalves reservoir, one of the most important water sources in the state. Downstream, the valley widens towards the coast. The floodplain around Açu is also known for its carnaúba palms, whose groves are a familiar feature of this landscape.
