Ærø lies in the South Funen Archipelago, south of Funen in the Baltic. It is a long, narrow island stretching from northwest to southeast, with a gently rolling interior of fields, small woods and country lanes. The coastline is soft and uneven, with shallow bays, spits and a few lagoons, and the main roads run along its length, linking three harbour towns.
Ærøskøbing, near the middle of the north coast, is one of Denmark's best-preserved small market towns, with cobbled streets and low eighteenth-century houses. Marstal, at the southeastern end, has a long history as a shipbuilding and seafaring town, while Søby in the northwest has a ferry harbour and a shipyard. Ærø is also a popular destination for international weddings.
