Rømø is Denmark's southernmost North Sea island, lying in the Wadden Sea close to the German border. From above its most striking element is the causeway: a long, straight embankment carrying the road across the tidal flats from the mainland. The island itself is roughly oval, with heath and plantations inland and a wide belt of sand on the west side.
The western beach is so broad and firm that cars are allowed to drive onto it at Lakolk, one of the few places in Europe where that is possible. The island is part of the Wadden Sea National Park, and the surrounding flats, exposed at low tide, are an important stop for migrating birds.

Small settlements and a harbour at the southern end add detail, while tidal channels curl around the island's edges.

The very wide sand beach on the west coast, where vehicles can drive onto the sand. It forms a broad pale strip between the dunes and the sea.
Havneby harbour
At the southern end of the island, the harbour is where ferries leave for Sylt in Germany. Its quays and breakwaters add a compact, angular detail to the soft coastline.
