Mandø lies in the Danish Wadden Sea, off the southwest coast of Jutland. On a map it is a small, roughly round island, enclosed by a dike that shields its fields and single village from the sea. Outside the dike stretch broad tidal flats, and at low tide the sea recedes far enough to expose a wide expanse of sand and mud.
The island is reached by a causeway road across the tidal flats, passable only at low tide and flooded twice a day. Visitors often cross by tractor bus, and tide tables decide when anyone can travel. On the map that road is a thin line leading out over open flats, one of the most unusual routes you will find on any island.
