Sylt is Germany's northernmost island, and its outline is unmistakable. A narrow strip of land runs north to south for roughly forty kilometres, with an unbroken sandy beach along the whole western side. In the middle, a broad arm reaches east toward the mainland, so the island looks like an anchor or a stretched letter T laid along the coast.
Westerland, the largest town, sits where the arms meet. It has the densest street pattern on the island and the station at the end of the Hindenburgdamm. This railway causeway crosses the Wadden Sea from the mainland and carries both trains and car-shuttle trains, since there is no road link. On the map it is a single straight line over open water.
North of Westerland, a Sylt map poster shows wide dune country around Kampen and List, where some of the dunes are still moving. The southern tip narrows to the harbour village of Hörnum. On the eastern side, the shallow Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site, fills the space between the island and the mainland.

The railway causeway to the mainland, opened in 1927. It is the island's only fixed link and appears as one thin, straight line across the tidal flats.
