Mulsum lies in Land Wursten, the strip of coastal marsh between Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven in Lower Saxony. The land is almost perfectly flat and was won from the sea over centuries. From above, it is defined less by roads than by water: long drainage ditches, straight field boundaries and a coastline protected by dikes.
Settlements in this region traditionally stood on raised mounds known as Wurten, built to keep houses dry during storm floods, and Land Wursten takes its name from them. The village itself is small, a modest cluster of houses and farmsteads along the local roads, with open farmland spreading out in every direction.
The area of about eight square kilometres is mostly fields, ditches and farm tracks. A Mulsum map poster shows that pattern plainly as a fine web of parallel lines describing how the marsh is drained and farmed, while the coast and the tidal flats of the Wadden Sea lie not far to the west.
