Aguascalientes lies on the central Mexican plateau, and from above its structure is remarkably clear. A compact historic centre sits at the middle, and a series of concentric ring roads, known locally as the first, second and third anillo, encircle it, giving the city an almost diagrammatic shape.
The name refers to the hot springs that once drew settlers to the area. The city is known across Mexico for the Feria de San Marcos, one of the country's largest annual fairs, held around the Jardín de San Marcos. It was also the birthplace of José Guadalupe Posada, the printmaker whose skeleton figures became icons.
