León de los Aldama spreads across the flat Bajío region of Guanajuato, one of the most productive agricultural and industrial corridors in Mexico. Founded in 1576, the city kept a modest colonial core around its main plaza and cathedral, but most of its streets belong to the twentieth century, laid out in wide, fairly regular grids that extend in every direction across the plain.
León is known throughout Mexico as the capital of leather and footwear, and whole districts are organised around tanneries, workshops and shoe markets. The name honours the Aldama brothers, figures of the independence movement. A notable civic landmark is the Arco de la Calzada, a triumphal arch marking the start of an old tree-lined avenue near the centre.
A long green corridor follows the Río de los Gómez through the city, and boulevards such as López Mateos cross the plan as straight, busy arteries.
