Aichach is the seat of the Aichach-Friedberg district in Bavaria, between Augsburg and Ingolstadt. On the map, the old town is easy to find. It is a compact oval of streets in the Paar valley, and the Oberes Tor and Unteres Tor still mark the ends of its long central square.
Around that medieval core, later districts spread out over the gentle landscape, with the River Paar and its side channels running along one side. Rail lines and main roads cross the valley, and outlying villages appear as smaller clusters among fields and woodland.
One of those villages, Oberwittelsbach, is the site of the ancestral castle of the Wittelsbach family, the dynasty that ruled Bavaria for centuries.
