Nuremberg's historic centre is still enclosed by a long medieval wall, much of it intact, with towers and gates along its circuit. From above the Altstadt is an irregular oval divided by the Pegnitz river into two halves, named after their main churches: St. Sebald on the north bank and St. Lorenz on the south. A ring road follows the line of the moat outside the walls.
At the northern edge of the old town, the Kaiserburg rises on a sandstone ridge, the highest point in the centre. Streets slope down from the castle toward the river, where small islands and bridges break up the water. Beyond the ring, the city spreads out in later districts, with rail lines and wide avenues leading away.
A Nuremberg map poster also includes the large open areas to the southeast, where the lakes of the Dutzendteich lie next to the former Nazi party rally grounds, now used as a documentation centre and park. The city is also known for its Christmas market and as the home of Albrecht Dürer, whose house stands below the castle.

The river divides the Altstadt in two, with islands and several bridges in the centre. It gives the dense core a clear east–west axis.

To the southeast, a chain of lakes and the vast former rally grounds create large, open shapes that contrast with the tight streets of the old town.
