Ajara is a town in the Kolhapur district of southern Maharashtra, close to the Western Ghats and the border with Karnataka. The Hiranyakeshi river runs past it, and from above the town appears as a modest cluster of streets on gently rolling land, with forested hills rising to the west.
The area gets heavy monsoon rain from the nearby Ghats, which keeps the surrounding countryside green for much of the year. Rice and other crops fill the fields around the town, and the map shows a patchwork of small plots, village roads and streams feeding into the river.
