Gadag-Betageri is a twin city in northern Karnataka, formed when the neighbouring towns of Gadag and Betageri were joined under one municipality. On the map the merger is still legible: two older centres, each with its own knot of narrow lanes, now bound together by shared roads and newer neighbourhoods that have filled the ground between them on the level Deccan plain.
Betageri has long been associated with handloom weaving, and Gadag with temples and learning, including its links to the medieval Kannada poet Kumaravyasa. The surrounding landscape is open black-soil farmland, so the city ends abruptly, with fields pressing close to the outer streets. Railway lines cross the area and add strong straight lines to the organic lanes of the old quarters.
