Davangere lies near the geographic centre of Karnataka, on the flat, open Deccan plateau not far from the Tungabhadra River. On a map the city appears as a broad, roughly rounded mass of streets. A railway line and the national highway cross it, and irregular lakes and tanks sit in and around the urban area.
The older town centre has narrow, crowded lanes around market streets, a pattern typical of South Indian trading towns. Newer extensions are more regular, with residential layouts, wide main roads and planned blocks. The railway divides parts of the city, so the street pattern changes noticeably on each side of the tracks.
Davangere grew as a centre of cotton and textile mills and was once called the Manchester of Karnataka. Today it is better known across India for benne dose, the butter dosa named after the city.
