Alandi lies on the banks of the Indrayani river, a short distance north of Pune in Maharashtra. From above, the old town is a tight knot of lanes gathered on the riverbank, with ghats stepping down to the water and a bridge carrying traffic across. Newer housing and institutions spread outward along the roads toward Pune and the surrounding plateau.
The town is one of the most important pilgrimage places in Maharashtra because it holds the samadhi of Sant Dnyaneshwar, the thirteenth-century poet-saint who wrote the Dnyaneshwari. Each year the palkhi procession of the Ashadhi wari sets out from Alandi toward Pandharpur, and large numbers of devotees, the varkaris, gather here before the walk begins.
