Albano Laziale sits in the Castelli Romani, on the slopes of the Alban Hills south-east of Rome. The town borders Castel Gandolfo and lies near the edge of Lake Albano, a deep volcanic crater lake, and from above the curve of the crater rim shapes the terrain and roads around it.
The ancient Via Appia runs straight through the town, and it still forms its backbone on the map. Under Septimius Severus a legionary camp, the Castra Albana, was built here for the Second Parthian Legion, and remains of that Roman past are spread across the centre. The streets fan out from the Appia, stepping down the hillside toward the plain.
