Naples spreads around the curve of its bay, with the city rising steeply from the waterfront onto hills. On a map, the historic centre stands out as a remarkably regular grid, inherited from the Greek city of Neapolis. Its long parallel streets, including the straight line known as Spaccanapoli, cut through dense blocks and are still easy to trace today.
The historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. Around it, the city shifts shape: the tight grid of the Quartieri Spagnoli, the hillside curves of Vomero and Posillipo, the port and Castel dell'Ovo on its small promontory. To the east, Vesuvius rises beyond the suburbs.
