The Sorrento Peninsula reaches west from the mainland south of Naples, separating the Bay of Naples to the north from the Gulf of Salerno to the south. The Lattari Mountains form its backbone. On the northern side, where Sorrento and its neighbouring towns lie, there is a narrow terrace of flatter land above the sea, while the southern side drops steeply to the Amalfi Coast.
Sorrento stands on sheer cliffs of volcanic tuff above small harbours, looking across the bay to Vesuvius. Deep gorges cut through the town, the best known being the Valley of the Mills, where a ruined mill still stands at the bottom. At the western tip, Punta Campanella faces the island of Capri across a narrow strait.
