Alessandria stands on the plain of southern Piedmont, beside the Tanaro River and near its meeting with the Bormida. It was founded in 1168 by the Lombard League as a stronghold against Frederick Barbarossa and named after Pope Alexander III. On a map the old centre is a compact, rounded shape on the right bank, surrounded by boulevards that follow the line of the former walls.
Across the river lies the Cittadella, an eighteenth-century fortress built as a six-pointed star with bastions and moats. It is one of the largest surviving fortresses of its kind in Europe. An Alessandria map poster shows its sharp geometry clearly, set against the curving river and the softer street pattern of the city opposite.
The city is also known for the Borsalino hat, made here since the nineteenth century. Around the centre, the railway, the ring of boulevards and the newer districts extend across the flat farmland. From above, Alessandria looks like a city shaped by defence, with its round core on one bank of the Tanaro and its star-shaped citadel on the other.
