Alghero sits on the north-west coast of Sardinia, facing the open Mediterranean. Its historic centre occupies a small promontory enclosed by sea walls and bastions, and from above it reads as a dense, irregular knot of narrow lanes, sharply different from the straighter streets of the newer town that spreads north and east along the shore and around the harbour.
The town was taken by the Crown of Aragon in the fourteenth century and resettled with Catalans, and a local form of Catalan is still spoken there, which is why Alghero is sometimes called Barceloneta. Street signs appear in both Italian and Catalan. To the north-west, the coast curves around the bay of Porto Conte toward the cliffs of Capo Caccia and Neptune's Grotto.
