Alhama de Murcia lies in the Guadalentín valley in the Region of Murcia, south-west of the city of Murcia. From above, the town gathers at the base of a rocky hill crowned by the remains of a medieval castle, with the older streets climbing its lower slopes and newer districts spreading across the flatter ground below.
The name comes from the Arabic word for baths, a reference to the thermal springs that have been used here since Roman and Moorish times. To the west rises Sierra Espuña, a protected mountain area covered in pine forest, while the valley to the east is farmed and crossed by the main motorway between Murcia and Lorca.
