Granada spreads at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, where the Darro River meets the Genil. From above, two hills dominate the eastern side of the city. One is the Sabika hill, crowned by the long walled enclosure of the Alhambra. The other is the Albaicín, whose steep, twisting lanes preserve the plan of the medieval Moorish quarter.
Granada was the last Muslim kingdom on the Iberian Peninsula and fell to the Catholic Monarchs in 1492. The Alhambra and Generalife palaces and the Albaicín are listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Below them, the cathedral, the Gran Vía de Colón and the flatter modern districts stretch west toward the plain known as the Vega.

Albaicín lanes
Opposite the Alhambra, the Albaicín climbs its hill in a tangle of narrow, winding streets. It is one of the most intricate street patterns in Spain and very striking in fine line.
Darro valley
The small Darro River runs in a narrow valley between the two hills before disappearing beneath the city centre. Its path explains the sharp division in the map's eastern half.
