Málaga lies on the Mediterranean coast of Andalusia, and its map is framed by the sea to the south and mountains to the north. The historic centre sits between the port and the hill of Gibralfaro, crowned by its castle and linked to the Alcazaba below. West of the centre, the channel of the Guadalmedina River runs to the sea, dividing the old town from the districts beyond.
The city was founded by the Phoenicians and later became an important Moorish city, whose fortifications still dominate the centre. Pablo Picasso was born here in 1881, and the Museo Picasso Málaga stands in the old town. Today the renovated port area, with Muelle Uno and the glass cube of the Centre Pompidou Málaga, joins the centre to the sea.
