Altea sits on the Costa Blanca between Benidorm and Calp. On a map the town rises from the shoreline to a compact hilltop core. The narrow lanes of the old quarter follow the contours around the church at the summit, and newer streets spread out along the flatter ground by the sea.
The church of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo, with its blue-tiled domes, marks the top of the old town and is the image most people link with Altea. Below it, the waterfront runs in a long, gentle curve of pebble beaches. The marina and fishing harbour break that curve with straight breakwaters.
