Ambodimanga II lies in the Analanjirofo region on the east side of Madagascar, a green, rain-fed stretch of land between the Indian Ocean coast and the island's central highlands. From above, settlements here are modest and closely tied to the land around them. Paths and local roads curve along streams and low hills instead of following any planned grid.
The region's name is usually explained as referring to cloves. Clove trees, along with vanilla, lychee and other crops, have long shaped the local economy.
