Ambon lies on the island of the same name in eastern Indonesia and is the capital of Maluku Province. On the map, the city curves around the shore of Ambon Bay, a long inlet that almost cuts the island in two. Streets gather tightly on the narrow coastal strip, and steep green hills rise behind them and limit how far the city can spread.
For centuries Ambon was central to the spice trade in cloves and nutmeg that drew Portuguese and then Dutch traders to the Maluku islands. Fort Victoria, originally a Portuguese fort later taken over by the Dutch, still stands near the waterfront. Today the city is the main port and administrative centre of the province.
