Salawati lies in the Raja Ampat archipelago off the western tip of New Guinea, in Indonesia's province of Southwest Papua. It is one of the four main islands of Raja Ampat, and it sits unusually close to the mainland: only the narrow Sele Strait separates its eastern shore from the Bird's Head Peninsula near Sorong.
From above Salawati is broad and fairly low, with forest, swamp and rivers covering much of the land and a coastline lined with mangroves and small bays. Settlements are scattered, mostly near the coast, and linked by a small number of roads. The island has also been a site of oil and gas production for decades.
