Amdjarass lies in the Ennedi region of north-eastern Chad, in open Saharan country east of the Ennedi Plateau. It is the administrative centre of Ennedi-Est province. From above, the town is a modest cluster of streets and compounds on sandy ground, with dry watercourses and scattered rock outcrops around it.
The town has grown in recent years as a regional centre, and its airport connects it to a remote part of the country. The wider Ennedi area is known for sandstone arches, canyons and ancient rock art, and part of it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
