Amman Map Poster
Amman grew across a series of hills, called jabals, divided by deep valleys, or wadis. That terrain shapes almost every street. Few roads here run straight for long. They curve with the contours, switch back up the slopes and meet in tight junctions on the crests. From above, the city looks less like a grid and more like fingerprints: dense, looping lines pressed into uneven ground.
The old centre sits in a valley below the Citadel hill, where remains from Roman, Byzantine and Umayyad times stand on the summit. Just below it is the Roman Theatre, cut into the hillside, from the era when the city was called Philadelphia. On Jabal Amman, a chain of numbered traffic circles runs west along the ridge. The circles give the map a row of small, clear rings.
As the capital of Jordan, Amman has spread far beyond its first hills. New districts climb onto the plateau to the west, and ring roads wrap around the growing edge. The circles
A sequence of numbered roundabouts runs west from Jabal Amman along the main ridge. They show as a line of evenly spaced rings in the street pattern.
Valley streets
Roads follow the wadis and curl around the jabals. The result is a dense, organic pattern that shows the terrain without drawing a single contour line.
