Angol is in the Araucanía Region of Chile, at the foot of the Nahuelbuta coastal range. Two rivers, the Rehue and the Picoiquén, meet in the town to form the Vergara, and that confluence shapes the map. The streets are laid out on the land between the rivers, with bridges connecting the neighbourhoods on either bank.
The town has a long and turbulent history. It was first founded by the Spanish in the sixteenth century on what was then the frontier with Mapuche territory, and it was destroyed and rebuilt several times. It is sometimes called the Ciudad de los Confines, the city of the borderlands, a name that reflects that frontier past.
The central grid, arranged around a plaza, is regular and easy to read. Around it, rivers and wooded hills set the limits.
