Angra dos Reis sits on a deeply indented stretch of coast between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and few places look more intricate from above. The mainland breaks into coves, headlands and small beaches, while the bay is scattered with islands, the largest being Ilha Grande. The town itself occupies narrow strips of flat land between the water and the steep slopes of the Serra do Mar.
The city was founded by the Portuguese in the early sixteenth century, and its name refers to the Three Kings, after the feast of Epiphany. The Rio–Santos highway threads along the shoreline, linking the scattered neighbourhoods, and the port and shipyard occupy part of the waterfront. Further along the coast stands Brazil's only nuclear power plant.
