Anning lies just west of Kunming on the Yunnan plateau, in a valley shaped by the Tanglang River, which flows north out of Dian Lake. On a map the city follows the river and the flat valley floor, with the densest blocks gathered near the centre and hills rising steeply on both sides.
Newer districts form wide, regular blocks with broad avenues, especially where the valley opens out, while older areas show a finer, more irregular pattern of streets. Expressways and rail lines run through the valley towards Kunming, giving the map a few long, confident lines against the curling contours of the surrounding hills.
