Aparecida de Goiânia borders the state capital, Goiânia, to the south, and together they form one continuous urban area in the centre of Brazil. The city has grown very quickly since the 1970s, largely as a place where families settled on land more affordable than in the capital. From above, it is a patchwork of residential subdivisions, each with its own grid, joined along a few main roads.
Because many neighbourhoods were planned separately, their street patterns meet at slight angles, creating a subtle mosaic when seen at the scale of the whole city. A federal highway runs through the area on its way between the capital and the south of the state, and it forms one of the strongest lines on the map. Streams and their green margins cut through between districts.
The terrain belongs to the Cerrado plateau, gently rolling rather than steep, so the grids spread without much interruption. Today it is the second most populous city in Goiás and an important industrial and logistics centre.
