Apodi lies in the west of Rio Grande do Norte, in the valley of the river that shares its name and flows north toward Mossoró and the Atlantic. The most striking feature on its map is the Lagoa do Apodi, a large natural lagoon lying beside the town. Its broad, rounded shape sits against the street pattern and gives Apodi an unusual setting for the sertão.
To the west rises the Chapada do Apodi, a wide limestone plateau stretching toward the border with Ceará and known for irrigated fruit farming.
