Arao lies in the far north-west of Kumamoto Prefecture, on the shore of the Ariake Sea and next to Omuta in Fukuoka. The coast here is lined with broad tidal flats, famous in Japan for their huge tidal range. Behind them, the city spreads over low ground and gentle hills.
Arao's history is closely tied to the Mitsui Miike coal mine. The Manda Pit, with its brick buildings and winding towers, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for Japan's Meiji industrial revolution sites. Today the city is also known for Greenland, a large amusement park near the coast.
