Arcos de la Frontera is one of the best-known of Andalusia's white towns, the pueblos blancos. Its shape comes from its setting. The old town runs along a long, narrow sandstone ridge. On the south side the rock ends in a vertical cliff above the Guadalete River, which curves around the foot of the town.
The historic centre is a tangle of steep, narrow lanes that squeeze between the castle, the church of Santa María and the church of San Pedro. Newer districts spread down the gentler slopes to the west, where the streets widen and straighten. East of the town, a dam holds the river back as a reservoir.

The river loops beneath the southern cliff. Its smooth curve contrasts with the tight streets above it and gives the map a strong, natural line.

East of the town the river widens into a reservoir. Its irregular shoreline adds a broad, open shape to one side of the poster.
