Arele is a settlement in the Keriya oasis of southern Xinjiang, in Hotan Prefecture, close to the county town of Keriya, known in Chinese as Yutian. The Keriya River flows down from the Kunlun Mountains and fades out northward into the Taklamakan. The farmland it sustains forms a green island in a dry landscape, a shape immediately visible on any map of the area.
Unlike a compact town, Arele spreads across the land as a series of village clusters linked by rural roads. Houses sit beside their fields, and irrigation channels run between the plots. The map records this dispersed pattern as a fine network of lines, with small concentrations where lanes meet rather than one dense centre.
