Ario de Rosales sits in the uplands of Michoacán, in rolling country between the central plateau and the lower land to the south. The town follows the pattern of many Mexican towns founded in the colonial era. A central square sets the orientation, and blocks extend outward from it. Toward the edges the grid bends and breaks as it meets slopes, ravines and farmland.
The town has a place in Mexican history. In 1815, during the War of Independence, it hosted the installation of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice for Mexican America, an early judicial body of the insurgent movement. The second part of the name honours Víctor Rosales, an insurgent officer. That history sits quietly within the modest, orderly street plan.
