Arīsh is the capital of North Sinai Governorate and the largest city on the Sinai Peninsula. It lies on the Mediterranean coast, where Wadi el-Arish, the long, usually dry valley that drains much of northern Sinai, reaches the sea. The town has been a stop on the coastal route between Egypt and the Levant since ancient times.
On a map the coastline sets the main direction. Streets run inland from a shore known for its palm groves and pale sand, and the town spreads out on either side of the wadi's broad bed. Beyond the built-up edge the pattern breaks up into farm plots and then open desert, so the town's outline is sharp against the empty land around it.
