Rafaḩ sits at the southern end of the Gaza Strip, where the territory meets Egypt's Sinai. On a map, its streets fill the space between the border to the south and Khan Yunis to the north. Neighbourhoods and former refugee camps form dense clusters of narrow lanes. To the west, the city reaches towards the Mediterranean coast, and farmland once lined its eastern edge.
The town was divided in 1982, when a border was drawn through it after Israel's withdrawal from Sinai, leaving an Egyptian Rafah on the other side. The Rafah crossing became the main gateway between Gaza and Egypt. Since 2023 the city has suffered extensive destruction in the war, and much of what the map records has been damaged or lost.
A Rafaḩ map poster is less a travel souvenir than an act of remembrance. It preserves the layout of streets, camps and neighbourhoods as they appear in mapping data. For families and anyone with ties to the city, it is a way to keep that shape on the wall, whatever has happened on the ground.

Dense camp quarters
Former refugee camps are the tightest parts of the map, with small blocks and narrow alleys packed far more closely than in the surrounding neighbourhoods.
Towards the coast
West of the centre, the built-up area thins out towards sand and the Mediterranean shore. It is the only natural edge on a map otherwise shaped by borders.
