Aroor lies in the northern part of Kerala's Alappuzha district, just south of Kochi. The town sits on low land surrounded by the backwaters of the Vembanad Lake system, and on a map it appears as a narrow strip between wide channels. Water is everywhere: canals, lagoons and fishponds break up the land, and bridges link Aroor to the city to the north.
The town is one of Kerala's main centres for seafood processing and export. Many plants handle shrimp and other catch from the coast and backwaters, and the industry has shaped the local economy for decades. The National Highway runs through the town, and the bridges across the backwaters to Kumbalam and Kochi carry traffic between the city and southern Kerala.
