Kozhikode, long known as Calicut, stretches along the Malabar Coast of Kerala. On a map the long, straight beach forms the western edge, and the city spreads inland in a dense web of streets rather than a grid. The Kallai River marks the southern side of the centre, where timber yards once lined the banks, and backwaters and tree-covered neighbourhoods soften the outer districts.
For centuries the city was a major port of the spice trade, ruled by the Zamorins and visited by merchants from Arabia and China. In 1498 Vasco da Gama landed at Kappad, just north of the city, opening the sea route from Europe to India. In 2023 Kozhikode was named India's first UNESCO City of Literature.
