Ooty, officially Udhagamandalam, sits at over two thousand metres in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu. From above, it looks nothing like a plains town. Roads loop and switchback along the contours, houses scatter across ridges and valleys, and a long lake stretches through the western part of town. Tea estates and forests surround the settled area.
The British developed Ooty in the nineteenth century as the summer headquarters of the Madras Presidency. The lake was created in 1824 by damming a stream. The Government Botanical Garden, laid out in terraces on a hillside, dates from the same era. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, now part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing, climbs here from the plains.

Contour roads
Almost no road in Ooty runs straight for long. Streets bend and loop to follow the slopes, and that gives the map a soft, flowing character unusual for a town.
Mountain railway
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway approaches the town through the hills. Its narrow line winds into the station near the lake and completes a route famous for its rack section below Coonoor.
