Asagaya-minami is a residential district in Suginami ward, western Tokyo, just south of Asagaya station on the JR Chūō Line. On the map the railway forms a firm, straight edge along the north. From the station, streets spread southward in a dense, irregular web of narrow lanes, typical of Tokyo neighbourhoods that grew from old paths and field boundaries instead of a planned grid.
The main axis is the Pearl Center, a long covered shopping street running south from the station, lined with small shops and restaurants. Every summer it hosts the Asagaya Tanabata festival, known for the large papier-mâché figures hung above the arcade. On a poster the arcade appears as one continuous line cutting through the smaller lanes around it.
Further south, Ōme-kaidō, one of the old highways leading west out of central Tokyo, crosses the area as a broad, straight road. Between the railway and the highway, houses and small apartment buildings fill the blocks closely.
