Chōfu lies in western Tokyo, where the city starts to give way to the Musashino plain. On a map it is a dense residential weave cut through by the Keio Line, with the broad Tama River along its southern edge. In the north, the grounds of Jindai-ji temple and the Jindai Botanical Gardens show up as one of the largest green areas in the Tokyo suburbs.
Jindai-ji is among the oldest temples in the Tokyo area and is known for the soba shops around its gates. Chōfu is also linked to Shigeru Mizuki, the creator of GeGeGe no Kitaro, who lived there for decades. Characters from his manga now appear around the station area.
