Fuchū lies in western Tokyo on the terraces north of the Tama River, which forms its southern edge. The name means provincial capital: this was the seat of government of Musashi Province more than a thousand years ago, long before Edo became the centre of eastern Japan. Today the streets are dense and fine-grained, typical of the Tokyo suburbs, with rail lines running east to west.
At the heart of the city is Ōkunitama Shrine, approached by an avenue of zelkova trees protected as a natural monument. On the map the shrine grounds form a quiet rectangle in the centre. The old Kōshū Kaidō highway passes in front of it, and the Keiō line station is close by.
Further south, Tokyo Racecourse fills a large oval near the river, one of the most recognisable shapes in the frame.
